Novecembalo's harpsichord
Novecembalo's harpsichord was built by Tamburini in the 1970s. It has two manuals, and the range is from FA 0 – SO 5. It is thus suited for music written in the 1960s-70s, often intended for Neupert harpsichords which had the same range. The arrangement of the manuals and pedals is convenient for players and the first manual can be muted. The strings of our harpsichord are often played inside the instrument, using plectra, fingerstalls, quills and dampers of various materials. They are also plucked and sung to. No part of the harpsichord is ignored and even the case, the blocks at the ends of each manual and the lid take part in our performances. Each different composer is able to draw a different timbre from the instrument.
Novecembolo is currently planning the construction of a new harpsichord to be made by master harpsichord maker, Roberto Mattiazzo. It will be based on an in instrument made by Hieronymus Albrecht Hass in Hamburg, 1734 and the first manual will have a register of 16'. The timbre will thus be suited to music from the 1960s-70s written for ‘mass-produced' harpsichords such as Neuperts, and will also allow a wider range of timbres. The new harpsichord will be of the same proportions as the original, but will feature several innovations. Novecembalo is already discussing the materials with a specialist; the intention is to incorporate elements from the woods near our home area.
